I have the misfortune of owning a condo where the prior owners had a Miami theme in the bathroom. I had pink palm-tree wallpaper with cabinets painted a color somewhere between flamingo pink and turquoise. Needless to say it had to go. I recently replaced my cabinets and installed granite countertops. The wallpaper was the last trace of the prior owner in the bathroom.
I first started with the Zinnser Paper Tiger - a wall scoring tool. You can find it at Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, or most hardware stores. You’ll need to score the wallpaper so that any removal solution you apply can get to and disolve the underlying adhesive. If you have vinyl or metalic wallpaper, you especially need to score well. This tool does a great job. The more holes you make the easier it will come out.
Secret Formula (well not so secret if you use Google)
Next I applied a wallpaper removal gell I bought at Lowe’s. I ran out so I tried a home-solution I was recommended by a friend.
The formula is 1/3 fabric softener mixed with 2/3 warm water. This solution was magic! It worked better and faster than the commercial product. Plus my walls now smell downy fresh. I was able to go through in no time at probably 1/10 the cost. I used Kirkland Fabric Softener from Costco. Worked like a charm. I wish I would have tried this in the first place.
So there you go guys. Downy fresh wallpaper removal at 1/10 the cost. Consider the 5 mins you wasted of your valuable time reading this recouperated with the money you’ll save.
