50% of the World’s Population Now Lives in Cities

global-cities-029.jpg

There is a global conference at the Tate Museum in the U.K. entitled Global Cities. The conference focuses on Size, Speed, Form, Density, Diversity, and Commissions. The website also focuses on these topics. It is some interesting reading to say the least.

Some interesting stats from the website:

  • 1 of 3 city-dwellers live in slums
  • 1 out of 2 people on the planet live in a city
  • 20 mega-city regions with more than ten million people
  • 450 city regions with over one million residents

There are some interesting studies in how people live, how the future population growth will determine what’s possible for us, and the ramifications of population density. Also of interest are case studies of various cities and how they are dealing with size.
