There are many ways to make money: a job, your own brick & mortar business, or even an online business. Many individuals are making a go at it online. Some are even doing it for their sole income. One such person is blogger Tyler Cruz. Tyler is an internet entrepreneur and operates a self-named blog – TylerCruz.com as well as some other sites.

While this blog is not intended as a money-maker, I do have a few ads that help support my habits such as golf.

The U.S. Census Bureau tracks all the useful demographic details about our cities. It is cumbersome to sift through the statistics so I use a website that helps sort the data and reduces research time significantly.

The website is ZipSkinny.com. The site enable you to choose any zip code in the US and see the following information:

An important issue in corporate governance is the concept of interlocking boards. Interlocking boards means a director on one company’s board may also sit on the board of another.

In the above example, I’ve mapped SBC Communications (now AT&T). SBC has directors that are also on the board of Anhauser-Busch. Anhauser-Busch has directors that are on the board of Coca-Cola which in turn has directors also that are members of SBC’s board. In a way they are all connected. So what does this mean? For one they lose their independence and ability to regulate eachother. A member of SBC’s board may vote for a measure supported by another individual that is on Anhauser-Busch’s board for example. It could be that Anhauser-Busch needs something that the board is voting on. Or it could be a vote to increase the pay of the SBC president’s pay. The SBC president may be on the board of another company that will determine my pay at that company.

The independence is lost and the results become biased.

Check out the site. I already knew about some of the linkages at SBC, but you’ll be able to click on a company from their database and expand their directors, contracts, etc. If the company is big you’re almost certain to find some linkages.

I came across a website recently that was trying to raise money for new equipment for a baseball team. They were using Chipin to facilitate collections.

The chipin system itself is very simple. You must have a paypal account to create a chipin account. Once you create your account you simply describe what you are raising money for and set the goal of the amount you are looking to raise. You put some snippet of code on your website or blog and chipin takes care of the rest. Users simply click the widget to contribute. They can contribute via Paypal or credit card.

It is an interesting and simple solution to a common problem for individuals raising small or large amounts off-loading the tracking/communication to contributors of how much has been raised and collecting funds.

I decided to try it out myself on my blog. If you notice on the right-hand side at the bottom, there is a chipin widget. I setup a very small goal of raising $100. Since today is 7/7/07 a lucky day by some accounts, I’ve decided to create a lottery pool to invest the proceeds of the chipin in Texas lottery tickets and subsequently donated to charity. I have not yet decided which charity to donate to. If anyone has any good ideas or knows of any non-profit that needs funds let me know via comments and I’ll update the chipin to reflect accordingly.

John’s site inspired me to move my blog from blogger over to Wordpress.  He had a top 10 list of Wordpress plugins that encouraged me to switch to get the more customizable features and control of using my own hosted blog.  Now I have a blog domain after my own name.  I guess that’s sort of vain, but I figure if I get famous like John Chow its worth something.  If not, then if some other Dax Desai gets famous I could sell the domain to him.

I’ve been reading John’s blog almost daily now.  He maintains excellent posts and consistancy which is why I’m so attracted to it.  He posts about dining, technology, and business on the web and SEO.  His SEO article are excellent and I highly recommend you read his blog or add it to your RSS feeds.

John inspired me to customize my blog and he also inspired me to try my hand at SEO.  This blog entry/review is a trade for getting  a linkback on his highly Technorati ranked blog back.  This was an excellent idea John had to improve his own ranking.  I’ve watched as his rank has skyrocketed.  It works for him.  Maybe it will work a little for me.  Of course you still must maintain good content.  I wish John good luck and many thanks for his advice and tips.  I’ve left comments before and he has literally responded within 10mins.  Now that is attention and quality!
